Food Variety - how many different foods do I eat?
Written by Cassie Young

This week Kathryn at Limes & Lycopene is planning to talk about eating a variety of foods for good nutrition:

How many different foods do you eat?

I'd like to think I eat a good variety of foods but perhaps I could be doing better? One thing is for sure and that's the fact there's always room for me to make improvements to my diet. I am very excited about Kathryn's series and look forward to reading more on what she has to say on the topic.

I won't be writing a meal plan for this week as my husband has been taking over in the kitchen and I'm still taking it easy for the most part. I have, however, decided to keep a daily food journal for the week and post it to the site complete with all of the good and not-as-good food choices I might make!

I'll be focusing on the variety of foods I eat as Kathryn has me ever so curious about this. And now those of you who have asked before what it is I eat on a daily basis will be able to see for yourself. I wouldn't recommend anyone use my journal as a guide to what a healthy vegan diet should consist of, but perhaps it'll give you some ideas of what it is my vegan diet may consist of. Smile

Be sure to check out Kathryn's articles over at Limes & Lycopene!

I'm terribly lazy about eating a wide variety of foods. I do eat reasonably healthy but have a habit of getting stuck in ruts!
I hope you do better.

I'm a creature-of-habit, so I like to eat a lot of the same foods; but I DO make sure to eat a vegetable and fruit of EVERY color, every single day (I eat about 9+ servings of produce each day, so it's no problem for me to do that).

9+ per day! I want to be you when I grow up. I eat veg with meals but I very rarely snack so tend to miss out on fruit. I really need to get more organised and plan my meals better.

Clairwil, thanks for commenting! I get stuck in ruts from time to time as well - and it's usually my breakfasts and lunches! As for fruit, I was just saying to my husband the other day that I had noticed I didn't eat as much fruit over the winter. But now that spring is finally here and more fruit is available, I'm eating more of it again. I can't tell you how sick I was getting of apples, oranges and bananas this winter!

VeggieGirl is a perfect name for you, L! smilies/cheesy.gif I also have no problem getting plenty of servings of produce each day but one of the challenges I encounter is finding myself filling up on too much and not having room for other things I should include in my diet. I eat a variety of whole grains but wonder if I could stand to eat more servings of them.

Hi there Cassie - I'm looking forward to seeing your posts as well. As I said - I'm endlessly curious about what people actually eat (rather than what they tell me they eat, or what they'd like to be eating). I'm also curious to see how my own variety stacks up against others. I think it will be reasonable, but there's always scope for doing better.

Kathryn, I like finding new ways of looking at and doing things to become more aware of my eating patterns and habits and discovering new ways I could further improve. And I must say, your passion on the topic of eating well is quite contagious! I thank you for the info and inspiration!

you've made a few changes here! I like, a lot. can you believe that the feed for your blog mysteriously disappeared from my google reader, making me wonder where you were? god I hate technology at times.
I hope you are well these days, Cassie. and I admit I struggle in order to get a lot of variety in my diet, even though it's still better than it used to be a few years back.

Thanks Celine! I appreciate the email, too, and glad to know the feed thing was a fluky thing. (Though if anyone does have any troubles with the site or feed, don't hesitate to get in touch to let me know.) And doesn't it feel so good to know you're doing better than you used to? That's what this is all about for me. It's wonderful to see you! smilies/smiley.gif

I try to eat every colour of the rainbow in a day. I used to keep track of the colours daily to make sure that I was getting them all. Now it's a habbit that I don't even need to think about anymore.

At one point I pondered posting little graphics showing the colours in each of my recipe postings. Perhaps since more people are thinking about it -- it would not be a bad idea to implement it.

Your blog is absolutely gob-smack gorgeous by the way smilies/smiley.gif

Thanks, Happy Vegetarian! I like your graphics idea and think it would be interesting to see it included with your recipes. Thanks for taking the time to comment! smilies/smiley.gif
